The correct use of medical imaging pathways can reduce the number of "unnecessary" appendix removals (appendectomies) according to data1 presented at the 68th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) in Perth today.
The quality assurance review performed at the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) showed that unnecessary surgery was prevented by using CT scans to accurately diagnose or confirm the absence of acute appendicitis before an operation. This showed potential patient care and health economic benefits.
